In a new series called “WTF..?”, I’m going to publicly look into acronyms that I read or hear about. As a young designer, this happens to me relatively frequently, so I’m extra excited that you guys will be joining me for the ride. First up is IEQ, first introduced to me through the Architecture for Change Summit this past September.

IEQ stands for Indoor Environmental Quality.

After consulting Inhabitat, the CDC, and the National Institute of Building Sciences, I’ve gathered that IEQ is: a criteria of the USGBC’s LEED rating system that sets performance-based design standards for variables such as man-made contaminants, microbial growth, availability of daylight, acoustic privacy, and more, in addition to defining a integrated approach to thoughtful and sustainable interior design.

It’s worth noting that the initially subtle impact of designing with IEQ in mind becomes increasingly significant over time. For example, “companies that make the move to green buildings have employees with lower turnover rates, fewer sick days and higher productivity; schools demonstrate higher test scores, lower absenteeism and heightened academic enthusiasm among students,” according to Inhabitat. On the business end, manufacturers are also boasting about their IEQ ratings since it displays PR-friendly appreciation for LEED ratings in addition to fitting into a larger story about user-centric product lines.

November 3’s daily design idea comes from a GOOD article dated September 15th, 2010: it’s common sense that “there are health benefits to better buildings. The real challenge is incorporating these findings into policy.”
